Calvo, J.; Morriconi, E.; Orler, P..
The theoretical aspects of reproductive strategies and life histories are analyzed. The gonadal structures and the main features of gametogenesis of bivalves and echinoids are described. Research on the reproductive characteristics and gametogenic cycles of the bivalve molluscs in the Argentinian littoral and the echinoid Loxechinus albus is reviewed. Special references to Mytilus edulis, Aulacomya ater, Brachidontes purpuratus, Aequipecten tehuelchus, Zygochlamys patagonica, Ostrea puelchana, Clausinella gayi, Protothaca antiqua, Eurhomalea exalbida and Mesodesma mactroides are made. Analysis of reproductive cycles includes histological and ponderal descriptions of gonadal variations. The main trend found is the partial and multiple spawning episodes....

OceanDocs
Giussi, A.R..
Long tailed hake Macruronus magellanicus, is a demersal fish, distributed in the SW Atlantic Ocean, in Malvinas Current waters, from 36° and 55°S, mainly between 50m and 200m depth. The species is also distributed in Chilenian waters in the Pacific Ocean, being caught in the Magellan Strait and the Beagle Channel. Age determination was estimated with the sagittae otoliths, in which only one ring is formed during the year. Growth parameters were calculated directly and with back calculated methodology, no differences were observed between the results. Differences in growth sexes were evident from 3 years old. The oldest age observed was 13. Different distributional areas of adults through out the year could suggest a migratory movement in northern waters of...

OceanDocs
Schiariti, A..
In this Thesis we presented the first steps in the study of the life history and population dynamics of Lychnorhiza lucerna as well as the possibilities of development of its fishery in Argentina. L. lucerna presented a metagenetic life cycle characteristic of most scyphozoans. Polyps reproduced asexually by the production of podocysts and polidisk strobilation. The combination of both types of asexual reproduction resulted in a high strobilation rates indicating that the abundance of medusae would strongly depend on polyps abundance and reproduction. The absence of ephyrae in the Río de la Plata estuary suggest that L. lucerna doest not complete its life cycle locally but medusae would be produced by polyps located northwards along the Uruguayan or...

Pulpos octopódidos (Cephalopoda, Octopodidae). OceanDocs
Re, M.E..
Four species of the family Octopodidae were reported to occur along the Argentine coast Octopus tehuelchus, Eledone massyae, Enteroctopus megalocyathus and Robsonella fontaniana. The first two are distributed from Brazil to south of Rawson and San Jorge Gulf, respectively, in warm-temperate waters. E.megalocyathus and R.fontaniana are of Subantarctic origin, the first ranging from San Matias Gulf to Magellan Strait, the Beagle Channel and Malvinas Islands; R.fontaniana is distributed from San Matias Gulf southwards, with records in North Patagonian and San Jorge Gulfs, Chile and Peru. A synopsis of information about taxonomical status, patterns of geographic distribution and biological aspects of these four coastal octopodids is given.

The life history and survival of Neochetina in Lake Victoria basin: Basis for biological weed control OceanDocs
Ochiel, G.R.S.; Njoka, S.W.; Manyala, J.O.; Okeyo Owuor, J.B..
Using our own experimental data and published data, we review information on the control process of water hyacinth and its status in Lake Victoria basin, Kenya. Experimental results show that the mean fecundity of the two weevils is 290 and 237 eggs per female laid over a period of 16 weeks, with an adult longevity of 98 and 112 days for Neochetina bruchi and N. eichhorniae respectively. There was significant difference between the egg laying capacities of the two weevil species (p=0.002). The survival rate of the two species was significantly different (p<0.05) for all life stages except for larvae to pupa. There was no significant interaction between the species and the method of experimental egg setting (p<0.05). The fecundity of both N. bruchi...
